Charlie (00:28)
All right. We're back for another episode of the blitz, the bookie podcast. I'm Charlie Winkle joined by Anthony Roberts and it is officially Derby week Derby week, Kentucky Derby week. is Monday and it was 75 degrees and sunny in Louisville, Kentucky. Beautiful day. Couldn't ask for a better day. And the next four days they're calling for rain.

but Saturday, the forecast is looking pretty good. I think it's similar to today. So might be a little wet during the week, but like it's setting up for a nice first Saturday in May in Louisville, Kentucky. But I know one thing, Anthony, it's Monday of Derby week. You can tell me it's going to pour all week. I don't care. I'm ready for all of it. I don't want it to rain, but on Monday.

I don't give a shit. Let's go. wear a poncho. I'll put my raincoat on. I got Derby hats. I got one on right now. I got my Derby hats. What about ain't going to hurt us this week. Is it? Nope. We already got tickets for Friday, so we're locked in. We're going regardless. It's going to rain Friday too. I've just seen a forecast for Friday. First time I moved to 50 % rain. So

from what it's been like 20 % on a mind on Friday and it's on Saturday. It's at 30 now, so it's scattered, but still as long as it's scattered and not just a big front that comes through, you know, for a couple of hours, that would suck. if it's just a little here and there, we got covered seats. We'll be all right. think the only chance for the fronts to come through is tomorrow on Wednesday. from what my phone's we'll see how it goes. So of course we said,

This was going to be an all Derby episode, but there was a lot of stuff that happened this think we should touch on a couple of things we get to the horse stuff, Anthony, where you want to start NFL draft NFL draft, NFL draft. Everybody's talking about it. What's thought for Chador?

It just first thought when you think of the 2025 NFL draft. It's got to be to me, it's not that big a deal. I think everybody's trying to make something bigger out of it than what it is. And I might be wrong. And maybe it was the owners, blackballing them or. See, I don't think.

I don't buy into that. So here's my theory on There's only a handful of teams that are looking for quarterbacks. if you take a quarterback high, that sends a message to the guy in front of you. So you really got to be careful. We talked about this during college football season. To get drafted in the NFL as a quarterback, it's hard. there's like maybe five, six, seven of them drafted. And if you look at college football,

You could argue that you are way better off if you ain't gonna be that top one or two quarterback drafted to stay in college and make the NIL money. I've seen big arguments about that this week after the draft. mean, Sanders would have made probably a nice chunk of change, staying in Colorado. I'd heard an argument with Ubers at Texas. I think he's gonna make like one million this year. They said he turned down quite a bit of money. Yeah, turned down six, seven million. look, I'll be honest with you.

I think he's silly. Well, here's my

If NFL team, one of those handful of teams that needed a quarterback, if they thought he was good enough, would they have drafted him in the first or second round, third round? I think so. So absolutely. I'm not buying into the black balling thing. not. I've heard it all this week, Anthony, the black, the owners have blackballed him. I've heard the race thing. I've heard all the Sanders name, I don't buy into any of that.

For one, there's been a lot of chances taken in the NFL draft as long as you're good enough, right? We've talked about this even with coaching our boys. so here's my take on it. Sorry. I've said it all year during college football. I've never seen it with Sanders. One of my arguments was there's no way two of the best players in the country are on the same team with that week of schedule they had, and they weren't better than what they were. And when I watched Sanders,

My eyes, it just never told me. Now I didn't watch him a lot, so that was always, you know, when everybody was telling me how great he was, I just kept saying, well, I ain't seen him enough. but when I watched him, I always say trust your eyes and nothing, what he was doing, like grab my so that's where I was with it. But like you just said, Charlie, if you're good enough, the owners will take you. This is what,

I will say we say with our kids, I'll come back to this. If you are just a stud, a can't miss, they're taking him. I don't care what his name is, but you can be mouthy. You can be a little cocky. Okay. If you're a stud, if you are a freak, everybody, people will deal with that. If you are the top of the food chain, but if you are that borderline player and I don't care what level you're at, if you are that borderline player,

But we're not talking about a borderline player. but listen to my argument. If you're that player, then you got to say all the right things, do all the right things, talk the talk, walk the walk, grab the clipboard, whatever it takes with Sanders. He's never thought he was a... He might not have been thought that, but that's what the scouts thought. mean, read what they said. The scouts obviously thought that was a lot of hype that went around Sanders, dude. ⁓

I heard somebody make a good point. The media built him up to be this first round pick. And then the media is the first one coming back. ⁓ this is the reason he wasn't this. And this is the reason he wasn't that. So I'm not blaming the media, but the reason the public thought that he was as good as he was. Most people had... Let's be honest.

How many people, average people that aren't really big college football fans, how many people really have watched him play? Seriously. Unless you're a really big college I love college football. I know you do. How many games did you watch? Maybe two or three. I've only watched two or three. Maybe And didn't even watch the full game. Okay.

I just haven't watched him a lot and I don't think most of the public has. So the reason that these, the public thinks that he was what he was or what they thought he was, was because of the media. I'm not blaming it on all on the media. I think the scouts were, Charlie, we will tell whether the scouts were right or not, but Charlie, we talked about it.

Me and you had a private conversation a couple weeks ago and we talked about this. We touched on it. Scouts are a lot smarter than they used to be, man. Used to be, Scouts would maybe even buy into a little bit of that hype. These Scouts, dude, they're investing big money in these players. They know everything about these players when they draft them. At the end of the day, it's hard to get drafted as a quarterback.

And he never had the, if we talk to people, Charlie, we had friends of ours. You might remember this. They would come up Colorado man. They're one of the best teams in the country. They're awesome. Where were they? They were getting that from the media. They weren't watching them games. Come on. It was the hype. It was the hype train that came, that came with Deon. We both kind of looked at them and said, what do you, no way, no way.

I thought he was a good good this year, but not good enough to retire your Jersey. Yeah, I think he had a 500 record at Colorado. That's not good enough to retire your Jersey and not good enough. I'm not trying to pile on the kid, but I am not buying into the black ball and stuff.

I'm not because if he was good enough and a one of these teams thought that he could change their team, they would have drafted him. I don't care about the name. I don't care about all the bag. I will give the kid credit on this. The few videos that I saw of him over the two or three days throughout the draft did seem upbeat. He didn't seem like he was Charlie. He got humbled.

He got humble. Bottom line. They all got humble. Did you see that he got pranked? Yeah. Did you hear it? No, I didn't hear it. You didn't hear the prank call? I will say this. Hold on. Hold on. Did you hear the prank call? did not. Okay. crazy. And now they're saying the kid that did it, his dad's the offensive coordinator at look it up. It's like an SEC school, Georgia or something. Ole Miss. I don't remember the school.

That's a whole nother layer to it. But this kid, he's a college kid, somehow comes up with this number. He calls him and he acts like the GM of the Saints. He says he's Mickey Loomis. I think that's his name, Mickey Loomis. Says, yeah, know, something about we're about to pick you and then tells him you're have to wait a little bit longer. That is dirty. It is. That is, no, that's a, that's a dick move. It is. I would say this. Can you imagine that? No, it's horrible. That's a dick move. I would feel sorry for him, Mo.

But like I told my son, I don't feel sorry for him for dropping, but for that, that prank call was wrong. Look, he grew up Deion Sanders son. They've had the media around them. They've had the hype turn going. They've done everything they can. He went and got Travis Hunter. Travis Hunter carried him. Everything that could be done. And he just wasn't humbled. He was saying he wasn't going to play for this team or wasn't going play for that city. He wasn't going to play for Cleveland. Yeah. Say, look, that's where he ended up. He got humbled.

Do I think the owner's black body? No, think it comes down to risk versus reward. If you're a stud, we will take a chance on some of that baggage. But if you're a player that we just think, maybe, maybe not, At that point, I'm looking at the other things involved and you got all this baggage they got humble dude. And you know what?

I have no problem with Deion. love Deion as a player. like some things he's has said about the NIL, but there's some of the other garbage that's junk, the kid was overhyped. I thought he was. it looks like I was right, but maybe I'm not. He can still prove everybody wrong. But at least that my eyes was seeing with the scout seat because I've never seen it with the kid. The jury's still out. He can still prove himself. Absolutely. can, but let's not get it twisted.

He played for his dad in high school. He played for his dad at Jacksonville State and he played for his dad at Colorado and he had his Travis Hunter at Jacksonville State and had his Travis Hunter at Colorado both very weak schedules got a little bit harder at Colorado never played high level competition. Well now he is in what is the most interesting quarterback room I've ever I have ever seen Anthony tell him what it is.

Okay, we got a Cleveland's quarter five headed monster for before you get started. I want to know from any of the listeners do NFL teams in May typically have five We can named quarterbacks that you know who they are. I don't know if they do I don't think they do this is ridiculous We can just call it like, you know, the Cleveland Indians bullpen, you know, the Cleveland Browns bullpen starting rotation right here. Five. They're starting five

So we got a couple of old guys, a couple of younger guys. I guess they're going to throw a lot of darts at the board and see what lands. I like your idea of the Royal Rumble or something, just putting them in you got, so who would win? Royal Rumble, Flacco. We got Flacco who's like 40. He ain't winning. We got Deshaun Watson who's- Pickett or Watson's winning the fight. You got Watson.

in there, you know, his muscles are good because he gets all those massages. He's, he's a big boy. Sanders ain't whooping nobody. Gabriel, Gabriel ain't whooping nobody. then you got Sanders now and Dylan Gabriel. It's picking a watch too. It's picking a watch. they got, they got five. Dylan Gabriel is getting his ass kicked in the Royal rumble. So it's handers. He's pretty skinny. Is he? Yeah. That's one of his things. He, he, don't have

arm strength issues. you got Sanders in there with Flacco and who else? Say, Gabriel Watson and pick it. It's Watson and pick it. Yeah. Flacco is too old. Yeah. You're saying Sanders is he's, he's too young and cocky and skinny. He's grew up too rich. So who's that leave us with the Sean Watson and Kenny Pickett. Yep. Big, fight. Probably a good fight. don't know. You're good I'd love to see that happen. So who's going to actually win the quarterback spot?

So look, no way they want Flacco. He's too old. That's if nobody else can win. They have the old man around just in case nobody else can win, which is possible. Watson. I say Pickett's in there. Pickett's looking for his second and I agree with that, but I do think that they're going to Sanders or Gabriel. Yeah, Watson still wants to start, but man, come on. They need to get rid of him. That's just bad mojo. They just need to get rid of him. Like you said, cut ties.

Give him whatever the buyout is and get up out of here, dude. I think they're waiting for him to mess up. Somebody's done told him they don't mess He can't stay away from those parlors. I guarantee you, they got to... He'll get in trouble again. How many times has he been in trouble? Like every other year. Dude, that is so what their weight doing. Would you agree with that? Probably. Yeah. I wouldn't play him though. Regardless, he hasn't been that good.

Since he hasn't been good since he played in Houston and that's been, it seems like a decade ago. Yeah. So yeah, I'm looking at Pickett or Dylan Gabriel. How tall is that kid? Like five eight. They took him before saying, he bigger than scataboo? Listen, how big is he? Is he six? Is he six foot? There's no way he works in yesteryears football, but maybe he works in today's NFL. Listen.

He's a really good college quarterback, makes quick decisions, everything you want out of a quarterback, but he's small, man. He's small. How small is he? He's small. You don't know? No, I just know when I watch him, he looks small. He does look small. The news that really sticks out to me was the Jaguars.

Moving up from number five to number two. Got really aggressive with that. They traded Cleveland. Cleveland was setting at number two and the Jaguars were setting at five. They switched with them and they took Travis Hunter, Gabriel's six foot. They got him listed six foot. Yeah. On a good day. with cleats on. Yeah. It's a, but the Jaguars moved up to the second pick. They gave up a lot. just to move up.

three spots they gave up course their fifth round, which was, that's what they gave up this year, but they also gave much. gave up first round or next year, a number 36 pick. And all they did was move up three spots. I mean, as if Travis Hunter becomes that guy, I gave a first round or next year and a second round or a light first round or early second is 36. So it's second,

That's too much. But I love it for Travis Hunter. Jacksonville is not a whole lot better than Cleveland, but man, Cleveland is still Charlie, you know the big news on that. I think they drafted him for offense. I think I've heard that too. You know, know, Liam Cohen's going to use him. I think they drafted him to start offense I really do. I've heard that from places.

Then I heard it again after the draft and then me thinking about Liam Cohn. think I like it. Maybe he's better off. Maybe. I just think it's harder to insert a guy into your defense just here and there. maybe they're not in drafting for defense. Maybe they first. I mean, of course they'll try in there if it don't work out on offense. But what if he gets in there is just a dynamic playmaker on offense. Then they're going to say, well he can.

be dynamic on defense. Put him out there. He's going to play. There's no way that Jacksonville does not play him on defense. You get Brian. He's going to play offense. Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter. So you're betting he's going to be a starter on offense and a sub on D right now?

I only know if there'll be sub and that's my guess. don't know. don't think he's going to go in on D. ⁓ you're crazy. Okay. I'm not saying I can be wrong. We'll double or not in the five. I owe you from Kyle McCord not being a second round pick. I don't know on this one, but yeah, I knew on that one. ⁓ that was the big news there. Of course. Cam ward went one. We'll dig into that next week. We're going to really dig into all the teams who we think won, who we think lost one does just hit on a few.

of the big notes there for the local Kentucky guys, Buffalo Bills, one of your new teams. ⁓ They're not one of my new teams. Charlie's, he's coming over from the got big Deion Walker, which I think was one of the steals of the draft. fifth round? I think so, but going in this year, he was projected first round. I told y'all in here, I seen it. They were a good solid team early in the year, but they lost them right after they lost games and everybody just kind of quit. I'm not saying it's right.

But I watched Dion Walker play two and a half really hard years for us. I don't think he's a punk. just think it was a, they lost the locker room. The NFL, the NFL owners came, they boycotted. Yeah. They boycotted Dion Walker. Cause you know what? He was just the biggest of a fall. When did, when did Sanders get drafted? What round? Fifth? Yeah. I mean, they're almost identical falls, right? Yeah. The kid was Dion Walker at the beginning.

Not just a couple of weeks ago, the late first round, beginning of the year, beginning of the year. at one point late last year was projected top five. So he had just the biggest of a fall and I don't hear any of the complaining about him. No, you know why? Yeah. The name if they like him, they would have took him. No, same thing with Dion Walker. If they liked him, obviously there was something that they didn't see. We know we've talked about

You pointed out how my wife was actually one of the early people to point that out. She pointed out to me because I was taking it up for him. said, oh, because everybody always say they double and triple team. And I started watching him. I was like, Casey's, you're right. the dude's taking plays off. But that's when we started to lose our team. We had had those losses with that tough schedule. And I just think it wore on the whole team.

Casey might've called the scouts and shit because it wasn't long after that. He started falling in the draft. I'm serious. She was like really early on that. So yeah, Dion Walker, but he Harrison. got her Harrison, which

I don't want to say I hate the Bills. I'm a Dolphins fan, so I dislike the Bills. I really like Josh Allen, so it kind of sucks, but I do like that they've paired up with Ray Davis and now they got Max. But man, I love the stories that came out about Maxwell Harrison the night of the draft. I know y'all have probably seen it. Just super excited, super supportive. Every time somebody got drafted, what number did he go?

class. That's what number did he like number late first round 30 something, but the guy he has a lot of class literally hugged high fived every single guy and look like he was their best friend. And you know what videos of it. He was wanting to get drafted, but guess what? Just cause things ain't going your way in life and it didn't go bad. He still went first round, but any went to a really good. Sometimes when you go like you get you slip to the late first round.

or even if you slip to the fourth or fifth That benefited Lamar Jackson. That benefited Lamar Jackson. doesn't just have to be to the late first round, which late first round, you know, is always those good teams. You know how I If you slip to the second or third or fourth, even the fifth, sixth late in the draft, you might set yourself up in a really, really good situation.

Yeah. And to some, I've seen it. We've seen it. We've seen it a lot. told you was Zach Wilson going to Miami. I'd be much odd just because you can be in some really bad situations. am in Miami and Zach Wilson. He might have a little, little more competition in the quarterback room. Now. I like it. I didn't even know about it until my son, my oldest son.

told me the Dolphins drafted Ubers. I said, no, they didn't. And he choked me. my first initial thought was, I love it. And then it wasn't a couple of hours later, you texted me and said, I love this move. I do too. I follow Texas I will say he's not big. We want to talk about, I mean, I know he's not six foot. I think he's six one or six two, but he's not big. I don't think...

My eye test tells me he doesn't have a big arm. I'm not a scout. don't have, I don't know like what he did in the combine or why he slipped in the draft. Maybe I have to look into that, but to me, he looked, I feel like he's very comparable to a, to, to a, to a compare. He's comparable to a, to a. Yeah, I really do. hope, but I look, I don't actually, saying he has a, and I look,

I could be wrong even after reading this, Charlie. So I don't want to cause I'm not acting like I'm a guru on it, but I thought he was good at the longer passes. There's his ranking. They act like he, they say the golden arm kid and his house, like, as you're looking at his draft profile, his long passing is his, his strength out of everything. So why did he, why did he slip in the, I followed Texas a lot. Y'all know that if you follow the podcast, I'm telling you.

The reason I like the pick, look, he was one of the best quarterbacks in the country coming out of high school. He went to Ohio State, got paid. I forget who the quarterback might've been CJ Stroud. I forget who it was, but he came to Texas, did great. But Sarks, his game plan all year was get that lead early. You said he started at Ohio State? Yep, started at Ohio State. He was left. I think it was maybe Kayla Williams. They were the top two quarterbacks coming out of high school. was one of them.

That's surprising because he didn't run from he didn't run from March Manning. it wasn't that he ran He just he made some big money at Ohio State. But Ohio State had a loaded quarterback room. It was either Stroud or the other guy who was the guy here recently was it field field Yeah, anyhow, He came to Texas did awesome from the very beginning

Basarcs game plan, they had no running game in Texas. And his game plan, he would get these early leads and he would let his defense eat. Like that was his game plan. I'm up, no more chances, getting very conservative. It almost cost him against Arizona State. I'm going to let my defense eat. That's how much he believed in his defense. I think Ubers could have put up a little bit bigger numbers than what he did. I just think they really leaned on that defense when they got up. So like the pick. I do too. I'm not.

I'm not a to a hater by any means. I wish to would be a pro bowler and stay healthy and lead us to a Super Bowl. I don't care who it is. I just want to see the Dolphins win some playoff games. I've told you about I've said it on here. I think my number one is Kentucky sports, Kentucky basketball and football. But I'll tell you what Anthony. I'd probably right now in this point in my life.

I would probably rather see the Dolphins get to a Superbowl than anything in sports. I think it's been since the ⁓

Since I don't even know when the last time we won a playoff game, honestly, maybe Chad Pennington and we've never really made a run. I need my dolphins to win some playoff games and get to a Superbowl before I die. Anthony, man. I really thought y'all had a nice team last couple of years. Like y'all. Yeah. And then we went into the game of Thrones in Kansas City. And this year to it got hurt again. Last year he stayed healthy and we made it to the playoffs. We just slipped up a little bit at the end of the year.

and ended up going to Kansas City in the first round of the playoffs. Tua is not a cold weather quarterback, Charlie. I wouldn't even start Tua. Like if he would have my quarterback all year and he was my ride or die, he put up big numbers. But if we were going into snow, I'm going to pull Nick Saban like he did with Tua at halftime with Jalen Hurts. I'm pulling somebody. I'm going just go to Tua and say, look, dude, you know it, I know it, everybody knows it. You're not built for this. Can Ewers play in the cold? think he's from Ohio. Is he? I think.

I don't know how state I'm not look, I don't care who it is. I do like the pick. I like yours. I like Zach Wilson. I like to one of them's got to be something. I need one of them to work out. I don't really care who it is to be honest. Who is this from Texas? Yeah. Zach Wilson's from Utah. So that's maybe your code word. don't know if any of them can play in the cold Utah. Maybe. Yeah.

Zach Wilson's good. I hope he turns out to be good. But the Jets might have. Jets struggle with him up and spit him out. All right. Any anything else on the draft? ⁓ Scataboo got drafted. Scataboo. I wouldn't have to Arizona. I wouldn't have drafted him. I look I thought it was amazing what he did that night and that day and I'll tip my head to the guy. But somebody made the argument with Blake Corm from Michigan. I thought it was a good argument.

Everybody says, why would you draft Skataboo? Cause he's hard to tackle. And somebody said, yeah, Blake Corm was hard to tackle too. Them guys in NFL can he He's not a bust yet. He's only been in league for two years. No, by no means is he a bust, but that was a big thing coming out of college. Okay, nobody tackling him. He's just bulldozer. Till you get to the NFL.

All right. So I'm not adopting the, bills as my team, but I'm sure a lot of Kentucky fans are and you already like, you already like the bills. got about three teams I bills, Bengals, Rams, and I like them all three a lot. I'm probably a little bit more partial to the Bengals. They're kind of our, don't got a home team here. So out of them, I like Stafford, I like Allen and I like Burrow, but, I like them all a lot and it's hard to separate them for me.

But if you told me to pick one, I'm probably going barrel. I thought there was two definite camp misses going into the draft. The first one was your boy from Penn State. went to the Giants, And the second one may be surprising to some people, but I think the tight end from Penn State Warren,

I think he's going to be a camp miss and he actually was the second tight end taken. Yep. The bears took a Loveland, ⁓ Michigan tight end. So, most drafts, we'll see that. I think they're both good. I agree with that. I do agree with that. I agree with that. I'm not hating on the kid, the other kid that the bears took, but I just, the Penn State guy, ⁓ what's his name? Tyler, Tyler Warren. Tyler Warren. I just think he's a camp miss. think, and he get, he went to the Colts. Who knows? Maybe he's the next.

Who was it? needed a, who'd they have? Clark. I said his name early. needed a tight end. Cause they said that Anthony Richers. Josh is yelling right now. What it is. Dallas Clark, Dallas Clark. we go. They say the coats, you know, Anthony Richardson has trouble with accuracy. So they wanted to get him a target that was closer to closer to him. So they definitely were going tight end. the coats, they don't have, they got some nice players. If they can get Anthony Richardson playing good.

Good luck with that. Son, he's good. Watch. Richardson. He got beat by Kentucky. I got that card, Charlie. Anthony Richardson got beat by Kentucky. I think Anthony Richardson horrible, but we're collecting cards now, me and my son. And I bought this card because this guy was giving it away for a lot cheaper than what he should have. it's like, he knows it's like one of five. So I'm rooting for him.

Cause he knows. I got it cheap. got it. Dude, I got it for like $70. I want to find this shit out of my collection. Let me find this sucker that'll buy this. But I did read. So of course I did my research when I went to bat they say they're still in with him. they still believe in him. They brought Daniel Jones in hope really to kind of push him. Daniel Jones will push him cause they are dead even.

Yeah. Those guys are dead. Even actually, I Daniel Jones might be a little better and y'all know what I think about Daniel Jones. They, every quarterback guy that watches Jones, they say, cause you know, Jones can run a little. He's got a good enough at him though. We've seen it. How long do you play? He's been on the giants for what? Five years, six years.

That guy don't know how to run offense up there. do like him. I his first game. Yeah, I do. Remember the play where they was at the first game of his career. I don't know if it his game. First prime time game. Cause I want to say it was a Sunday night or a Monday night game. What happened? It was something 50 yard run and then he fumbled. Nobody touched him. Is that what it was? Yeah. Something like that. He's had a couple of years or no, he fell down. Did he fall down? Yeah. No, he trip at the.

He did something. I he went to spike the ball or something or they down the ball and there was, there was a bone. He was running for a long touchdown in like his, I want to say it was his first prime time game and he either fumbled or he tripped over his own feet and fell. Maybe did both. I could happen to anybody. dude. mean, I know it's dumb luck, but I'm still not so the guy's no good. I'm glad we got Zach Wilson and not Daniel Jones.

I do think Daniel Jones is still all right. He loves, Anthony loves Daniel Jones. I asked, I asked, but I guess they're lying to me. I they're lying to lying. All right, Let's see, before we get to the horses, there was the, it's a busy weekend really. I know you don't watch the hockey. I've been watching the hockey,

My capitals are up three one. That's all that matters. fights? Yeah, there was a fight. Actually, there was a fight in game three, I want to say when we lost. other than that, I'm cheering for the Kings in the West. I don't know why I like kind of like the Kings. Charlie, people want to hear about the fights in hockey. They don't fight that much in the playoffs.

Although they did get in a fight the other day. They might fight at the end of the game. Once one team knows they're about to lose, but I'm telling you, man, turn a hockey game on at least in the third period with like five minutes to go six minutes to go. As long as it's a one goal, if it's tied or a one goal game.

watch it for the last five minutes. I got to at least play the sport one time to watch it. That's kind of my played? No, never put on a of ice skates. I've played on ice before. I am not a good ice skater, but I did play on ice one time. Have you really played hockey? Yeah, no, not in full gear. Like as a kid, I skated on ice and we played with no pads and...

And I was falling all over the place. You the little kid from Mighty Ducks where he goes out to his pond out back, frozen pond. That's exactly what it was, But even better than that, we used to play street hockey right in the middle of the, in our court on the concrete. We used to play in either skates or rollerblades. Was that here in Louisville? No, this was in Maryland. I thought so. But I play a shit Louisville. You had to have skates or rollerblades on. And we

Anthony, when I tell you we played full contact hockey in the middle of the street, did thinking back on it. If I looked out the window and saw my kids doing what I was doing, I would strangle them. And I'm sure that the neighbors in my neighborhood, because we lived in a small little neighborhood, I'm sure they were probably looking out the window like what in that? But I'm telling you, dude, we used to blast each other on the concrete. It was fun.

We had, that's probably what y'all liked about it most. was fun. Goberg. ⁓ that's where they found in mighty ducks. That's where they found the goalie. Goberg hockey's not lacrosse and soccer's huge. When your kids up in the Northeast, high hockey is not like, I didn't know anybody that played hockey in Maryland, but we played it in the street But thinking back on it, we were crazy as hell for doing that.

Anything with contacts phone when you're kids smear the, you know, king of the hill, whatever king of the ball, smear the queer. We can say it. It's the queer. That's what I I seen a post asking, you know, what did you call that game? When you just somebody had a football and you just try to tackle, kill the man with the we call it a smear the queer, but I didn't know there was a, like, there's all kinds of names for it, depending on what

I guess region you live in, was called different stuff. I didn't know there was so many different names. Killed a pitch back tackle, killed a man with the ball, killed the man with the ball. There was some other. of the heel. I've heard it or something like that. We used to play King of the Hill was a separate game. Yeah. You had to have a hill for that one. Pretty much the same thing though. You, somebody's at the top of the hill. You just had tackle into the bottom of the hill. You know, that's why we were.

You know, we always have these new age kids aren't tough. That's why we were such good tacklers there. We tackled all the time. Yeah, we did. We played full contact football too. And I go outside, my kids are trying to play tackle football and I'm like, no, too hand touch. How many bones you think we broke and didn't go to the I always think like when kids like my daughter, goes to hospital has a little fractured bone and you know, I get upset that ain't no break.

do. But it's happened to me twice in the last six months. How many times do you think we broke little bones like that and didn't go to the hospital? Dude, I think I might have broke five or ten bones like that. It never went like the little small I would have like pain in my arm for like a week and then it'd get better. It was probably a fracture. Yeah, maybe. I might have.

played right through a torn ACL that I might still have right to this day. I know I broke my ankle one time. I know without a doubt I broke my ankle one time. Didn't go to hospital. I know I broke some fingers too. Yeah. didn't go to hospital? No, I never went to a hospital. I've definitely broke a couple of these fingers. son's had two broken arms in the last six months. And I doubted him both times too. I feel a

Like an asshole. I did it twice. I'm never doing it again, Anthony. You know how I am. I'm kind of like you when it comes to that shit, but dude, I questioned him the first time he ended up with a broken arm. Then he hurts his arm the second time. Actually says I broke my arm as soon as he did it. He said, I'm okay with the true breaks. Like you showed me on X-ray and you showed me a break. I'm good with that out. It's a break. Yeah. I get it. If you ain't been in the hospital with your kids lately, go there and give them some symptoms of a hurt arm.

They will say, I had a doctor tell me, well, we can't see no hairline fracture, but it could be hidden up underneath there. So we're going to treat it like a you got to see something, don't you? Yeah. But I feel like, you know, Charlie, both times it took us 24 hours both times to take him to the hospital. Cause I'm of course his bone wasn't popping through his skin and it wasn't really swollen that bad. The first one was the second day it was swollen, but this time it wasn't.

So it took us 24 hours, but I'm gonna tell you then next day he couldn't, he couldn't even. Yeah. yeah. See y'all got that UPS insurance. We got that, what they call a high deductible plan. High deductible plan means you, you pay the first three or 4,000 of anything. So we make our kids wait one week. UPS insurance is not what it used to be. Well, let me you how deductible plan when you have a three or $4,000 deductible, we tell the kids let's wait a week.

I felt bad for the weight in the day, but the next day he couldn't he couldn't move his arm. See, I would have I would have helped him through that. So you just keep moving it for him. So we had had we had blitz pictures that night for baseball. Yeah. And we just got him back. Yeah. And Charlie's looking at him and he looks at the one where he's got his hand like this with his glove on. All he's doing is just like this and he goes.

my arm hurts so bad trying to hold my glove like that. That was before we took him. So he had a broken arm there in the So I don't even know how we got off. No, it's good stuff, man. Look, talking about the NBA, there's a little bit going on.

Playoffs are going to one, but I think it's going to pick up next round. these early round games, they're kind of blow, not blow out. some of them are starting to pick up right now. is. Nick's are up three to one on the pistons. T wolves are up three to one on the Lakers. Lakers in trouble going to go out. Lakers are in trouble. Celtics up three to one on the magic Pacers are up three to one on Milwaukee. So then we're kind of in, not in hand, but

They just need one more not to cut you off as we record, the calves are up 56 points in the fourth quarter. I know you said they were up 50 something already. they were up like 48. They're at 56. They're up 56 with four, five minutes left. That's making fit. they took it off. They were at three. Oh, so that's gonna, I guess, end at four. Oh, that team's ready to go out on vacation. The heat's ready to go on vacation. they're going fishing. Yeah, they're going fishing.

to me from what I've seen in the NBA. There's three teams. There's two in the East Cleveland and the Celtics. And then you got the thunder in the West. That's what I'm saying. And that might be the case, but we do got a couple of good series here. tomorrow. We got game five of nuggets, clippers, clippers. That one's tied up two to two. been a good, good series there.

I think we're going to get some good series, but I think they'll be in the next round. So you didn't see what happened with the Knicks, right? No, I didn't heard about it from you. Yeah. So the Knicks did kind of get away with one, So the Pistons had the ball with, I don't know, six or seven seconds left down one ball goes up. There's this scrum under the basket for the rebound. Somehow the Pistons guy gets it and kicks it out to this guy in the corner.

and gives him a quick pump fake and gets the guy in the air jumps up shoots the three and gets a lot of contact Anthony a lot of contact with the series at two to one was two to one so if the other team would have wanted been two to two now it's three to one there's a huge difference so they were down one

He definitely got fouled. They did not call it. Would have put him on the line for three shots. Nine on one night, at least about a 90 % winner from there. Close to it for sure. All you gotta do, you gotta hit two, two out of three in the NBA. Even if you just hit one, you go to overtime, you got a 50, 50 chance from winning from there. You're a 90 % chance from winning from there at least.

NBA comes out either that night or the next day and says they made a mistake and it was a foul. What do you think about that? I think that Knicks deserve a break. Well, they got one. Well, I'm just saying. I know I'm not hating, you know, I picked the Knicks, so I wanted them to win. I hate that for the Pistons. I do kind of like this Pistons team though. I do. K. Cunningham's got me. I like that guy a lot. I know I said that last week, but

You're right though, the Knicks, the Knicks are probably, their fans are probably like, y'all need to shut the fuck up. Cause we've had years and years of unlucky situations. So really without bitching, I don't feel like you hear them cry a whole Knicks deserve a good team up there. You know, I'm cheering for the Knicks, but they did get, they did get lucky right there.

does suck man because that is a huge difference like you said. huge. That made it three one and now they're going back to New York. Three to one is close to over. It's not over. It's not over. It's not over but three to one you have to win three straight two to two you're in a dogfight and they're going back to New York so that's trouble. So that's that's tomorrow too. Yep. That's tomorrow. We got a couple so a couple good ones there. The Pistons can maybe maybe fight back and make that three to two. Looks like the

Pacers and the Bucks. I haven't watched any of that series. Pacers getting on. They say Pacers. That was a bad draw for the Bucks. the Pacers. That's just a team that's had the Bucks number. Lillard. They say he maybe busted up his Achilles. Yep. And they just came back from the sickness or whatever. Getting too old. And then he, I think they said Achilles, man. You know what? This usually is a sign of, and I hate it because I like the Lord. Sometimes you just start to get old. You gotta hang it up or.

What do you think, Yanis? He's on his way out of Milwaukee, right? This was their last chance. They got Lillard. I feel like he asked for another player. He said he would stay there. He said, get me another player. I almost think he handpicked Lillard. It just hasn't worked out. know, uh, reminds me of Kevin Garnett up in Minnesota a little bit, but Yanis, they get a championship in Milwaukee. So I always feel like Kevin spent his best years in, kind of wasted them in Minnesota.

I think Kevin Garnett was really good. He got him a championship in Boston. He's one of my maybe top, maybe 15 or 20 players of all time. I like him. I like Kevin Garnett a lot. how good do you think he was? You think he wasted some of his prime years in Minnesota? I mean, he wasted them in terms of having a legit shot at a championship, he was nasty in his early years. Kevin Garnett was nasty. I feel like it. Boston, he was...

He was still good at Boston, but he was like a veteran that was using his crafty skills and he was a killer, but he was in Minnesota, dude. He was a freak. ⁓ dude. He was definitely one of my favorite players. Top 20. It's hard to, hard to narrow that down. He dunk on your heart. Plus I told you, I, I've cheered for the, if I've had one team that I'd say I cheered for the most over the years besides

whatever team Jamal Mashburn was on, it was the Celtics. I loved Paul Pierce. Even before they got all them, I cheered for the Celtics. But when they got that big three.

I was all over that team. So yeah, KG is one of my favorites. There's another good series that's tonight. The Rockets and the Warriors. Warriors are actually up to one. know, LeBron's first part of his career. I was a big LeBron fan. I've went up and down with LeBron too. I first watched him, I thought he was going to be better than Jordan. I don't think he ever got there. Not that he ain't skilled enough because he is and he might be the most skilled. When I say skilled, not skilled, talented enough, but

I just don't think he ever that killer instinct. And really I got off from him when he started winning. I'd watched him, I think it was series maybe against Dallas or somebody, but I was just seeing him, he kept passing the ball at the end. And I said, dude, I'm done with him. And that's when he started winning after that. but I was a big LeBron guy. I, I'll still say one of the most amazing things I ever seen, he went to Cleveland and Cleveland was the worst team in the NBA. That's why they had the number one pick.

And didn't he take him to like the championship of the first first year second year? That's unheard of look everybody talks about how great Victor is and he is good they're still not that good a team LeBron took a really bad team and took him to the championship really quick. We can have the LeBron here in the next week or two.

I respect the guy. went up and down with him. I liked him early, early in his career then. But he's crazy talented, right? ⁓ yeah. Crazy. I respect what I'm watching. Yeah, me too. I respect that in 10, 15 years from now, I'll be talking about, man, I was lucky to see LeBron play. I mean, I can respect that. I don't like the antics with the crying and the...

flopping when he barely gets hit. That's the stuff I don't like, but that's a discussion for a whole other day, but I've been up and down. do absolutely respect. You know, Anthony, that I can respect greatness. You've seen me do it with Tom Brady, right? You are. You almost kind of see me go from hating Tom Brady to actually liking him towards the very end of his career. I got to the point where I was

just respect what I'm watching. I got that way with Kobe. I was not a Kobe guy. Was not a Kobe guy. I wasn't super early, but later in his career and definitely after. Yeah. I mean, he's spitting image. There's nobody. We'll talk about some of that spitting image of Jordan. I said for a lot of years, Bo Jackson was the best athlete I ever seen.

I think LeBron surpassed him. I think LeBron is the best athlete I've ever seen. I don't even think it's close. can have that conversation for sure. Best athlete. He's freaking nature. Oh, no doubt. He's 40 years old and he's still putting up. He's not just out 10 points a game. He's still dominating points in the game and he's still

goes up and dunks the ball and makes good. He made it. had a big block the other night. The Lakers are down. Dude, when he was young, what three one It is three. You know, people always talk about it, but I truly believe when he was in his prime, you could have took him to NFL team and they would have had him ready to play tight end in two months. I get off the LeBron. Let's get off the brine. What do you think about rockets and warriors? I like the warriors to win that. They're actually

The Rockets were the higher seeded, were the lower, however you want to it. They were the better seeded team. I like the Rockets. I like the Rockets. They got that. They got this one guy. It's a game tonight. They got that one guy. I forget his name. He's a foreigner. think they got to win tonight. We got a good card of him, so we'll be rooting for him. It's all about the cards now. It's all about the cards. We're, me and my son, we're into cards right now. So I taught him they were wasting money for a long time.

I finally broke back in just the old habit that I brought back from the dead. That I'm in Thompson. That's the dude that they got. That's good. There's a lot of good players. Like they're not household names. I've learned that guys are different when they get to the NBA. Some of them, you know, are just freak athletes and they really take to the NBA and

They might have just been a mediocre player in college, but they are just a freak athlete. They go to the NBA. I feel like they're not building their brand up, I guess because they jumped college team to college team, but they don't have these big brands and identities. And I think that's why a lot of people don't know some of NBA players now, because I feel like college almost allowed you to build that brand and kind of who you were. And hey, that's Rodney Rogers or that's whoever. feel like some of these guys.

You really got to be tuned in and know who they are and they're really good players. A lot of foreigners, I guess, so we don't see a lot of More foreigners than ever are being drafted right now. Maybe that's part of it too. You know, we don't see those players playing college. We're going to have one at Kentucky this year. I told you, me and Rex pulled that card. It was one of 10. His name was Donovan Klingon. Yeah, I said, that's a nobody. I looked it up. He was the number seven pick

They had a really impressive rookie year and they're saying how much potential I think the kid has all I thought I knew about sports. Need to tune in on NBA, I guess. All It's Derby time. Anthony. Yep. Yep. It's Derby time. Derby Derby. I love Kentucky Derby week. I don't care if it rains. I'm going to the track. You got to figure out what's up tomorrow. I can't work. I'll be there. I'll be there. It's just a matter of if I take my son with me.

depends if he gots his- They ain't playing no baseball tomorrow. If he don't go to school, he can't play. But it's supposed to rain.

So yeah, be ready to go, man. Be ready to go. Get Rex and let's go out there tomorrow. It'll probably be a little rainy. We'll hang out underneath.

No, it's, don't stop me at the track. And I don't, yeah, I'm not worried about the rain. Not worried about the rain at all. I'm excited. Look, I'll probably be there every day. I met my wife at Oakes for people that don't know. her at Oakes about 22 years ago in the infield. I can tell you this, I can show you the exact spot where I met my wife. So Oakes is always kind of a special day to us. Really kind of what we celebrate our

We celebrate our wedding anniversary, but we kind of celebrate more, the first day we I tell people, Oaks is just as big as Derby, you know, as as experience. I know the Derby is bigger on a national stage, but it's the same experience when you go to the track. Both, there's a lot of energy, both pretty much a sellout, kind of the same experience. I say that, but I guess I've never been on the clubhouse side on Derby. got us some clubhouse tickets though.

So that's kind of big time. What's this our third year going to clubhouse Charlie? Yep, we'll be in the clubhouse on Friday. So we have graduated from the infield. So for those that don't know the infield is you just go over there and some shorts and t-shirt and you still let you bring a cooler and you sneak in liquor. try to find it and you go out there and you get really drunk. There's usually bands out there and that's what you do when you're young because you're on limited budget. That's probably where

Where you would rather be. That's where all the high school kids are at. Yeah. You still get in for 20 bucks. Now it's what, 85 to get in the infield? I don't even know how much it is, but it's getting close to a hundred bucks. That's stupid. When we were young, it was like 20, $25. to get in the infield. I want to say high school was like 20 for Oaks and like 35 for something for Derby. And then it was just up and up and up. I don't know what it is now cause I haven't.

Like you said, we kind of, you know what I I used to love to watch on the news for Oaks and Derby. Every year the news guy would be there and they were right there by where they were bringing people in the gates and securities checking them for liquor. Everybody's trying to bring in liquor because liquor is really expensive at the track. So everybody's trying to sneak in liquor, their coolers and just all the creative ideas people would come up with. They would take sandwiches and wrap them in Saran wrap. They'd cut out the inside of the sandwich, put a pint there.

Just a lot of crap. I heard stories of guys going to the racetrack earlier that week, going out to the infield, burying it in the ground and then digging it up. It's just a lot of creative ideas. I remember one time I went up to a vendor. They had kind of a younger person there. I gave him like a hundred dollars for a bottle, which it might sound like a lot, but when you're buying drinks that are like $15 a piece and they just put a shot in there, it's actually a really good bargain. a, but just all the creative ways that they used to.

bringing liquor to the track and grew up by the track. So well, I one of the funnest days of my life in that infield. Yeah. Junior year high school, pouring down rain, mud puddles all over the place. Everybody ended up in the mud.

Was it the mosh pit over by the concert? There was a mosh pit everywhere. I got my brains knocked out, dude. I'm just going to tell you, I fly guys. This was 98. This was was you were a junior. We're same age. So you're a junior. I'm going to tell you, I got my brain. Look, they had a mosh pit out there. Not the rupture, but it was concert. They had a mosh pit. It's mud. Everybody. I'm out there like an idiot, This dude blindsided me, dude. it was a cheap shot sucker punch. No, no, no, no, no, no,

Mosh pit, everybody's banging into each other and stuff. Dude, knock my freaking lights out, it was a dirty mood. Did it you out? borderline. Like, I wanted to be knocked Just seeing my bike, everything, cheap shot, cheap shot, but it's, you're one of the, it's kind of what you got to expect everything when you're in those things. So I blame myself for, jumping in there,

You know, I just thought I was invincible. had a little liquor in me and a man, I just got my bell room. It's wild in the infield. That day was awesome. Like I said, everybody ended up in the mud. Couple of my buddies ended up fighting somebody. And since they were all muddy and I was all muddy right next to them, we all got kicked out. We end up, they put us on a golf cart and escort us out.

Everybody's cheering for us on the way out. We're flipping the cops off while they're riding us on the golf one of the greatest days. ⁓ it's a good stories. But yeah, we have, have luckily been able to graduate to over over on the good side. No, we have. And Charlie, you shared that story with me this past week. I've been telling everybody and

Maybe you don't think it's as funny as me, but I think it's absolutely friend of yours got right. know, Barbero's probably might be one of the most iconic Derby winners of our lifetime. He ended up dying after the Derby the next race. He was undefeated. They got a statue right in front of Churchill Downs. Just really iconic Derby winner. Everybody knows the name around here. Well, Charlie had a friend that was working for Churchill Down and one of his friends, ⁓ he was just a vendor.

just working concessions, young. snuck out there to the winner circle after the race right there as they're celebrating and taking the official Derby winning pitcher with the family. a very proud moment for this family. They bred this horse probably. Was there 15 people in the picture? Yes. mean, just like, that's a pitcher you want to put on your mantle forever. if you own horses, that's the pinnacle, and there's one official Derby.

picture that stuff. That's the one they put on the SPN, the newspaper everywhere at the track. It's, it's in, it's all over the place. The, ⁓ the official picture and Charlie's Barberos winning. What year was that? ⁓ 96, 90. think it was 96 and Charlie's friend, which was a vendor had his tag around his neck. Got right in the middle of the family.

Right dead in the middle. Well, this wasn't my buddy. This was my bu this is the guy I know. It was his buddy. Now the guy I know is known for getting into a lot of places on the court after Louisville wins the national championship that got vacated. He's he'll sit behind the Kentucky bench or he's always sneaking somewhere. So yeah, they

Somehow finagled their way right by the, where the picture was getting taken. He said he was actually petting Barbaro. I'm not even ⁓ He said he was petting Barbaro. This guy is, I mean, look, he listened and I think it's awesome, buddy, but he was just a bender. He's working for like a concession and they hear the proudest- an error mark or proudest moment of this,

this family's life, all the connections to the horse, big smile, and right in the middle of their picture that sets up on their mantle and their $10 million home is a picture of a guy they don't know that works for Errmark and is at the center. He is the focal point of the picture. He's got a red polo shirt on, stands out like a sore thumb, and like Anthony said, front row down like squatted down in front of him.

holding his number one up. If you said there was one focal point of the picture, it's him besides the horse. It's red shirt. Nobody else. Everybody else is dressed to the tee and he's got a red polo shirt on and you can see the security guy kind of I think it's security. I kind of grabbing for shoulders. The guy right behind him. Yeah, I think right after there you got kicked out right Charlie. So the way my buddy tells it.

I was really surprised that he backed off from that because like I said, he's known for sneaking into stuff, but I think he knew not to get in that picture.

He knew it was gonna be an automatic fire. So, Barbaro is one of the most famous horses of all time. Would you say?

Definitely of our lifetime. wouldn't say, yeah. mean, top five or top 10 horses of all time, right? There's a statue of him outside of Churchill Valley. Yeah. I don't know if I'd put him there, but I think of our lifetime, the story behind it was special. I'm not saying one of the best horses. I'm saying one of the most hyped, biggest talked about stories. Besides American Pharaoh, I think that he was the most iconic Derby winner of our lifetime. Look it up, guys.

Barbaro official Kentucky Derby winner circle picture and see if you can spot the sore thumb. It's good stuff. Please look it up. Please look it up. It's not hard to find. Like soon as Charlie told me I Googled it. I was like, ⁓ Jesus Christ. Can you imagine what that family thinks? For one, can you imagine what they thought the very first time that they saw the picture and then

Now years, what 25, 30 years later, can you imagine every time they look at that picture, you know, they, you think think that guy, you think that guy owns a big blow up of it? No doubt. No doubt. No dude. I'd have the nicest picture of it. You've ever seen. I'd have one in every room. Dude. I'd have like a framed up thousand dollar frame. I'd have one in every room. I'd have stickers made up. I would tell everybody I was part owner in that horse. It is. It is a

really cool story, especially it would have been with any Derby winner, but especially that it turned out to be Barber. Oh, you think that ever got him a, um, I forgot him a honey pie. You think setting in his apartment or house, you know, he had the picture and said, I was part owner and he's lucky. just, he's, he's lucky. Didn't end up in jail that day. He did lose his job. think I don't think they can take him to jail for that.

But I don't think you can. I think it's great. I think it's awesome. But I don't think they could take you to jail for that. I want to know what that family thinks about it when they see it. Dude, they gotta laugh. At some point, it's gotta be funny. If I was him, I would- They probably got him photoshopped out. Dude, if I was him, would contact the family. I'd be like, just want you to know that this has been special for me and I hope it's been special for you. I thought you was gonna say.

After all these years, I knew I did wrong and I'm sorry. That's what I like your call better. I you was going to say look at a Barbara. Oh, great for me. I hope it's been great for you. It's been a great story for me and my family. Listen, look it up. Barbara. Oh Derby official winning photo. he's right there. Richard airmark tag on number one.

That's what he's holding up, the number one. Sticks out so bad. At least he didn't do something dumb, number one, you know?

squatting down like he's with his homeboys. Nothing against your body because I think it's awesome. But you can kind of he's ran a bunch of snooty duties and you can kind of tell he don't walk. You can definitely tell he don't belong. Nothing against that. He would have been just like I was. He's in there with a bunch of rich like

Billionaires. Yeah, and he's got he's got a Portland fade and he's squatted down putting a number one up with that was the haircut back from day. ⁓ That's great. all right. Let's get talking Derby. So Charlie, me Derby special

My grandmother's boyfriend, which I kind of called him my grandpa. I don't know what you want to call him. They were bookies down where they worked. You've heard the stories, but he introduced me to horse racing. I learned how to read a racing form at a really young age. And horse racing has always been a love for me. We grew up by the track. So we went a lot. I used to park cars. used to do it. know, everything involved with the Derby. can tell you so many stories from me. Been in the security.

office and probably at least eight times when I was underage, betting. think they, after a while, it got funny to them. You know, they'd catch me betting and I'd go to security million lot of memories at the track. We used to go with my grandmother. We used to go every day after she retired. I can tell you, you know, from 19, I would say 87, I was born in 82, 87 to now. can probably tell you every nook and cranny.

within everything that hasn't been built in the last 15 years. Because when we were kids, me and my cousins would play high angle seeking there and we went back in every little back room. know, when the track's not busy and you have all those areas, we would run around and it's just the track's special, always been special to my family. we've been going to the clubhouse the last three years for Oaks.

It's Derby week and Derby week's always been special to me and it always will be special to me. And I, I'm just super excited. It's here. So before we get into the horses for the

What is your favorite Derby? Weak moment that you've ever had at the track. You got something. got something. my wife.

it's all the camp I that's it, right? No, it is. I that's Meet her. How old was y'all? 18. No, I was... Is it what, No, no, no, no, no, no. She was 17. She turned 18 in a month, so I was a cradle robber. So what was that, your senior year? No, I was out of high school about a year or two, so I was 19 or 20. So I'm about a year or two older than my wife. in that age, but I could take you right to where I met her at.

All right. So mine's not as exciting as meeting my wife. I didn't meet my wife at the track, but I do have a, I do have a cool story. I've know I've told you, Anthony, I don't know if you've ever been on the backside for Derby, but it is the best experience to me. And I think for a person like you, is, I've never been that really enjoys the horses.

I think you would absolutely love it. Now, somebody that wants to be up in all the glamour, because it's totally different. You're not, it's totally different from being on the front side with all the glitz and glamour. You are on the backside. If you don't know what the backside is, that's where the horse barns are at. That's where all the horses, before every race on Derby day, when you're hanging out back there, you see all the horses filing out to the track.

And after the race, see them all coming back in. So being there on Derby, Anthony is really cool, dude. I bet it is. You see, you literally can stand there by the gate and watch the horses come out onto the track from the backside to walk around to the paddock.

The year always dreaming one. Yep. had, I had always dream 30 minutes after and we lucked into this 30 minutes after the Derby, you know, they bring the horse back. go straight for testing. know that, right? Yep. They go straight for testing we were probably headed out. And the next thing you know, we're, we're just walking through the backside and we see this horse.

walking through and just had a couple more people around him than, you know, usually you just got a couple of handlers and maybe the trainer or maybe an owner or something, just a couple of people walking with the horse, seen a horse walking with maybe 10 to 15 people. It was always dreaming. We followed him right over to his barn, stood there for probably 15, 20 minutes, watched him give him a bath and we were there with maybe 15 people.

That's 30 minutes after the horse just won the Derby. I'm standing there 10 feet from the horse, watching it get a bath. And I'm telling you, I'm not lying when I say there was no more than 15 to 20 people. It was not a crowd of a hundred, 200 people. It was like 15 people. just looked into it. That's cool. So I always, I'll always remember that. I thought that was, I think that was really cool. I was actually on the backside the year, the year maximum security got

Pista is qualified. he didn't get pissed at. Yeah. Disqualified, disqualified country house. We actually saw country house walking through the backside too. We didn't follow him. I guess you know why we didn't follow him because you remember how long that inquiry took forever. Yep. Forever. Like I want to say it was like 40 minutes. Am I wrong on that?

It was like 30, 40 minutes. They didn't want to do it. had to. It was, I swear it took 30 minutes. didn't want to. Everybody was upset. They didn't want to do had the horse that he did it to. They had to do it. Maximum security. No, war, war or the wheel. That's who, yeah. Yeah. They had to do it. He was, he was making a really good move. He was at a good spot making his move. He was in great position.

And he just straight cut him off. was your horse too. I knew it right away, Charlie, because I was cussing and I said, when he passed by, I it was going to be an inquiry. But you know, they didn't bring down Monarchos when he cut off an invisible link and I had invisible link. And even though Monarchos was much the best, I still think he probably should have brought him down. If you go by the rules, yeah. So we had to stand around so long waiting for the result of the race that by the time we ended up seeing

country house walking by, but it wasn't the same. No, no. It's country house. Country house that won the Derby. Yeah. And it was raining that day. ⁓ Wasn't it, wasn't the track money that day, maximum security one? think it was. house better be lucky that Rich Strike ended up winning the Derby because country house probably would have went down as the worst Derby winner ever. Yeah. Rich Strike never won a race again. Rich Strike's the one that was the 21.

He was a bum. Number 21. He's on juice. I'll show y'all the video one day. The horse was on juice after the race. He's all veins coming out of his neck. He's supposed to be tired. He's trying to bite. He was trying to bite. Dude, they put too much shit stuff in him. They put too much. The horse was a bum. And that's the horse. I was trying to remember a few weeks ago when you were talking about who was the horse. Forensi fire. Yeah. Forensi fire was trying to bite.

Yeah, but that was just out of during a race. That happened during that was cool. That was that was cool because that was being competitive. This horse had too much drugs in rich strikes trying to bite the outrider after a mile and a quarter race, which you should be exhausted. And then tell me his veins weren't popping out of his neck and he wasn't sweating all crazy. Charlie, he was. Well, they go get tested. Yeah, like we.

Bafford got caught a bunch too before they called him out. don't want that black guy either. They, they, they were forced to do something. Maximum security after getting, in the Derby. If you remember, it wasn't long after he got in trouble for juicing, didn't he? Yep. No, he went to Bafford's barn. Yeah. that'll do it. It's a Bafford's back. Yeah. He Bafford is back. Bafford is back.

One cool story, not to interrupt you, I wanna tell my, I told you the wife and I remember one cool real quick and I'll be super quick. One time I was leaving the track on Derby week, I'm a horse racing guy. Gary Stevens, one of the greatest jockeys ever. He was doing, his little show inside there. He was leaving. We were walking out and he was walking out to his car were walking out together and we just happened to be in the same direction.

And then after a while, I needed to go off to my car, but I just kept walking with him. I got to talk horse, true horse racing. he could tell I knew what I was talking about. I think he kind of respected Got to talk true horse racing, like strategy of what was going on, coming up in the Derby and different things for 15 minutes with Gary Stevens. That was cool. No, is. That was cool. So I know we've talked about the new documentary on Netflix that I've watched the first

one and a half episodes, but you're going to have to, you're going to have to watch that by next week. We're going, we're going to do a review. I think we should do a review of each episode of that. I'm telling you, you're really going to like it. They kind of follow, they'll follow a owner, the horse and the trainer and the jockey. So they kind of look at all different aspects of the race and industry and it's pretty cool. And they're following some of the horses from last year.

that were trying, trying to win. They they followed fierceness. They follow just a touch. And then they, in the third episode, actually did, I actually fell asleep. I woke up, they were in the third episode and they were, ⁓ mystic Dan. They're talking about in the third episode. So they three, they follow three good ones. think there's like five or six episodes.

Mystic Dan's in the third one. So maybe the fourth and fifth episode change up the format or maybe they just, heard it's good. I heard it's good from not more than just you. I've heard it. Yeah, it is really good. But speaking of Gary Stevens, and I'll have to look this up. I just thought about this. Do you remember that there was horse racing show on HBO maybe 10 to 15 years ago and Gary Stevens was in it.

Do you, was it a movie or like a show? I want to say it was a show, but maybe was it a movie? No, no, no, no. This was a show. think it only lasted for like one. I'm going have to look this up too. think it only, somebody tell me maybe Josh is yelling at us right now. There was a show. I want to say it was on HBO. Gary Stevens was in it. There was some other people in it It was a really good horse racing.

It wasn't a documentary. was an actual show, but Gary Stevens was acting in it. Pretty good, pretty good though. I can't remember what it was called. I'm gonna have to look back at it though. And we'll maybe go back and watch that too, because that was something that you would like to, can't remember what it was called. you know, it's exciting. Like you said before, I interrupt you, Bafford is back. That's the big news guys. Bafford's back.

but I'll say this. I would say he don't have the balls to dope no more. but in saying that Baffert's back, that's big for the Derby. Baffert, can out, listen to an interview. can hear in his voice that he was glad he was back.

Look, it was a bad situation. I'm not going to fault Churchill. I'll fault bad for a little bit, but I'm not going to like hate him for I don't think he did no different than what some other people did. But when he got caught, he didn't like it and he tried to fight it. And that's the part. Churchill had to do something. There was a lot of pressure from, a lot of people thought the government was going to get involved. No other track wanted to do nothing. They were just sitting there just waiting for the next person to do it. And Churchill took the lead and

know, Bafford had a lot of stuff swept during the rug and he's not the only one that's been caught. So I'm not going to say that, but I just didn't like what he did when he got caught. he wanted to keep fighting it. You got caught, dude. And then the excuse he made was ridiculous. So it was just a bad look on him, but he's back and I think that's good for the Derby. I'm happy for Bafford. I like Bafford. He's a good trainer. He's won a lot of Derbies, had a lot of great horses. He's got a lot of big owners that buy him a lot of million dollar horses.

he's actually married to a Louisville native, the news woman. What was her name? Jill Byrne. don't know what her name is. Yep. she was on news for forever. you can tell by effort loves a little, look, the Derby's the biggest thing in horse racing for horse racing person. go to these other areas and horse racing is fun and big, but it's not a whole month of celebration. know, the preakness is in Baltimore and I'm telling you.

75 % of the people that live there don't even know that it's Preakness Day. Yeah, I it. I believe it. And so it's a big event here. And I think anybody that loves horse racing can appreciate you know, them guys, that's what they do. And it comes somewhere where it's so big and people reckon, people don't normally recognize them trainers from other areas. I mean, they, a few horse racing people might, but when you're in Louisville,

They know what Bob Baffert looks like. Bob Baffert can't go anywhere around here without getting noticed. So you know, it's not like basketball or football where these guys are just mega stars. They're stars in their own little world and they're with their own fans. But when they come to Louisville, they are mega stars. And it's just a big event here. We're very proud of it in our city. And I think rightfully so. If you've never been or been a part of it, it's a big deal. A lot of fun things leading up for it.

Yeah, we're not a big city, know, big monster city, but we're not a small city. We're a mid-sized city, it's a really cool event if you've never been or been a part of it. But in saying that he's back, you got the, uh, the coach, they call him the coach cause he gets about seven big time assistants or somewhere in there that are now big time trainers herself. D Wayne Lucas. He's won many derbies, probably one of the greatest trainers of all time. I think he's, is 92. Is that right? Or is he 88?

I don't know. But I know that Seize the Gray actually won the Preakness last year, won the Pad Day mile. I won all kinds of money on that race last year, if you remember. And they say he trains his horses too hard. He runs them too much. And then right when everybody's running their jaws about him saying, that's an old school approach, you shouldn't run them but once a month, he runs them about every two weeks, it seems like. And guess who's got the horse with the most races under their belt in the Derby? Always Wayne Lucas. He runs the hell.

I think I heard you say one time, I don't got time to sit around and wait. look at this, I scan at his past performances and it looks like he's been racing for about two years. You know why I have so much respect for him because he's had so many guys that have been, Todd Pletcher is one of them, one the best trainers in the world. He's got other Dallas there's several of them, but when they left him, a lot of times those assistants, you know, take some business with them.

some of the owners and people they have relationships with. He never has begrudged them of that, and I've read that. And that's why he's had so many successful assistants. And nothing against Bob Baffert, because Bob has as successful as Wayne Lucas are both two of the best. But Bob don't put those assistants out, because I've read that he kind of don't allow his assistants to get that close with the owners. So I just think that's a very humble thing to do.

very unselfish thing to do. And that's why they call him the coach D Wayne. would love, listen, I'll have my Derby picks. kind of like his horse a little bit, but if he could win and ride off to the sunset at his age, I would be happy to lose all my bets in the Derby race for him to win that race. won the Preakness here a year. I mean, he won the Oaks a year two ago. Remember when Pletcher was his a long time assistant, which is one of the best trainers in the world now, waited out there and congratulated him after the race. That was a, he went with that Philly. What was her name?

A years ago, I forget, but after he won it, as he was coming back to the winner's circle, know, Pletcher's Philly lost. Nests was Pletcher's Philly. beat Nests and anyhow, was waiting on him right there as he came through the tunnel to congratulate him.

Pletcher just got second in that race and he had the favorite nest in that race and Lucas just beat him and he was there to congratulate the guy him how to train horses. I know who won that race and I cannot think about it. So I would love to see Wayne get one there. That awesome.

And so it's 89 years old. disagree with Anthony. I am not trading all my bets for him to win. No, no, no. I would. 89 years old guy still riding a horse out there training son. Well, speaking of American promise, which is D Wayne's horse. He is one of

The six, I would say six Anthony true, true speed horses that want the front. heard something say coach say the other day that he thinks them horses are faster than he is. think that's something I think he's going to try to lay out the pace. Anthony, I don't know if I can remember a Derby in a long time that had six true speed horses. One of speed. That's a lot.

Plenty of speed. Plenty of dead closers too. I feel like you want to be somewhere in the middle because there's always dead closers, always speed. I think you want to kind of have some topical speed and be right behind kind of the speed. Having a front runner in the Derby is going to be really tough. It's especially if your horse wants to be like on the lead or within a length or two of the lead.

and it's hard to have a deep closer. But I will tell you this, Sierra Leone changed my outlook a little bit on the deep closer. That horse was a beast

I'm not huge fan of these deep closers, but there's some deep closers in here too. But Anthony, to me, the speed in this race is what I think is the biggest story. four of the six speed horses, are in the first five post positions. You got your one horse. Who do you think is getting the lead? You got Citizen Bull in the one, Neo Equos.

both of those horses want the lead. Those are the one in the two spots. Then you got the four position, Rodriguez wants the front. And then you got the five horse, which we were just talking about, American promise wants the lead. So within the first five post positions, you're telling me four of those five are going for the lead. They ain't all getting there.

Something's gonna happen down there. I think that is gonna be the most interesting thing to see Especially right out of the gate is what happens down by the rail who can get out of there your other two speed one is at the the 20 spot way out there Yeah, he's a mallar. he's a man. He has no business in the Derby and Almighty, but you know, he's going to the front. yeah, I think you know, he's if he can get there Yeah, he's a he's a mallar. So

His speed should be a little faster. You know, as he starts stretching out, he was probably one of the top, not top horses, but he was in that group. But as he starts stretching out, you know, his breathing says a mile, mile and a quarter is too much. And it kind of showed that when he stretched out, but he got his points. So he's riding in the Derby. Yeah. So Owen Almighty is out there in the 20 going to be going for the lead, but that leads me to the sixth speed horse that wants the lead.

You've talked about him for the last week or so. I know you, I know I've heard you say in this horse's name. I don't know how you feel about him now, but East Avenue. He'll be there is going for the lead. And I think he set up the best to get to the lead. got four out of the five down there on the rail going for the lead. There's going to be some action. know, somebody's going to come in on them. I just think that something's going to get broke up down there on the rail.

I question if the 20 is going to be able to get out there. Maybe he can, maybe, but I like the way it sets up for the 12. I think East Avenue along with one or two of the horses on the rail and possibly. Who do you think gets the 20? think during the first time I think East Avenue gets it. I don't hate that pick. I'll sell that because I do think you got to break good to get it to get the lead. you definitely got to break good. There's no doubt he could break bad and be out of it right.

You know, right off the jump, but. But I think the fastest horse, I'm not saying he's the best. He will be in my Derby ticket, so. But I think the fastest horse that wants to lead. think it's Citizen Bull. I really do. I think at the one post, I don't think he has no other option. ⁓ he's gotta go. he's gotta go. I think he's fast. And I watched him. But Neal Leclose is gonna go right there with him. Let me tell you one thing I think is cool about Citizen Bull. I forget what race it was, but he stumbled out the gate.

I watched that horse recover so quick. He was athletic. It was athletic move. He like went down, but then came up running and went right to the lead against some really good horses. Yeah, that was against, that was too bad. Dude, that was impressive. And then he got pressed. Maybe that was the San Antonio Derby. Cause he got pressed. He did that. was the Robert B. Lewis. No, no, you're right. You're right on that. But I'm going to tell you, so I think he could get the lead. do think American promise is going to try to set off from it. I don't think he's going be far back. I think he's going to try to set off from it.

Rodriguez. I think if you try to fight for that lead, think it could be suicide for you if you got a few of them up there. But then I've seen that happen where everybody's thinking that and then somebody ends up getting not too hard of a lead. Does that make sense? What I'm saying? Like everybody's kind of scared of it and somebody goes for it. But I like your East Avenue. I think East Avenue is a really good horse too. And I do think he wants to be on the lead. So yeah.

I don't mind that pick at all as far as being on the lead. It's going to be tough up there. or two of those horses down on the rail is going to get there. I just don't know if all four of those five are going to get there.

I'm not big on the American Promise horse, but I have the least confidence in Rodriguez for some reason. I'm not, I'm not big on that horse. Well, he was at an authentic and authentic took time to develop and he just won the wood, but he did get to the rail rail and speed at the wood. I mean, that's always been a kind of a at aqueduct. If you get the rail speed, that's always been a thing. Kind of had everything his own way. the horse that closed second in that kind of went wide around both turns. He's only race three races.

He's out of curling. He's Rapoli's horse. Rapoli usually has the favor, but this year he's coming in on the radar. That's my horse. It's Grande. That's your top pick? My top pick. Top pick, Grande. Grande, 20 to one. Grande. I like some other ones though, but that will be like, I always have one horse. you hear people say, ah, big Derby winner and they got like five, six horses. If one of my other horses wins, that's great. And I hope I have them in my tickets and I will, but I'm not going to claim that I

pick the Derby winner. For me, you get one horse to pick as your Derby winner. And for me, it's Grande. He's 20 to one. I think he's great value. Look, I think journalism is really good at three to one, Charlie. might look back and say that was a steal. He's really good, but I'm with you. He's faced some small fields. I do think there was some talent in those fields. Some small fields. He's only faced five. Yeah. Every time out, except when he broke his maiden.

Five horses he's running against. That's right. Against Rodriguez, Edison bull, Barnes when he's ⁓ by AZA, there's some good horses in there, but I'm with you. I like the analogy cause he will be racing against 20 horses. there's no doubt that it's a different game I love how he has tactical speedo. I do. I do like that horse. I do, but you know, I don't, I'm not, I'm not giving three to one. You you know, I'm not betting on the favorite.

So he will, I might put him in maybe a couple of my exotics, but he's not going to be my pick. I do think he's a solid horse, four out of five races, he's only raced with four other horses. Five horse fields in four of his five races. It's going to be a different ball game come first Saturday of just talking about a few things that I like.

So American Promise, they paid a fortune for him as a baby.

D. Wayne Lucas, he ran him and ran him, the old saying on D. Wayne is when he gets a horse right, he can keep him right for a long time. He runs his horses more often than other people, and some people think that's crazy. he's old school trainer. if he runs back his Virginia Derby with the time that he ran and just the fractions he put out, I would argue to say that's good enough to win this race. It was a pretty crazy race in number that he ran.

in the Virginia Derby, but that is the Virginia Derby. They paid a lot for him as a baby, but he hadn't really panned out. mean, he was running in big races, he was working his way up and he won the Virginia Derby. So he's, he to me is a wild card, American promise. Not that I like him, not that I don't. He's the wild card to me. I like citizens bull lot. I think he has an excuse in the race that he lost. didn't get the lead, a horse cut over in front of him. He definitely needs to lead to win, but I do think that horse he gets on the front end.

They got a horse has a little dog in him. really do. had a tough San Antonio Derby. The Luxor Cafe is one Charlie that jumps out at me. That's the Japanese horse. Can't do it. He's out of American Feral. So it's not like he's just, bred over there. I don't know my wild card. Once again, he's a wild card. The Burnham square horse is the one that he's done nothing, you know, not done a whole lot wrong. Who was the Japan horse last year?

I actually got on him. was the time. Forever Young. He probably should have won. Probably should have won. only time I've ever liked a horse not from America in the Derby and he and you're right. Probably should have won. He ran really really really well. Man not buying in on either of these. I hear you. I'm not really either. you think they think there's some collusion going on with them getting put right next to each other?

I don't know. They're probably over in Japan saying what they throw us right next to each other. Yeah. Well, they got good posts though. They got really good posts. Six and seven. That's where you want to be. I mean, it's not maybe exactly, but that's, that's pretty strong posts. So so I kind of tell you where I'm at right about now. I really like sovereignty, I really, really like this horse. I'll be honest. that Godolphin's horse?

That's good dolphin. didn't know. Sure is. Yep. That's a mot. I like MOT too. Cause MOT takes his time with his horse. he didn't rush that horse. I actually kind of like tapping street too. Tapping that ass. That's what, that's what the Onans call them. Tapping that ass.

Chad said, that's my horse, man. As soon as he seen the name tapping that ass, that's my horse scratched. I kind of liked that horse though. That horse looked good tapping street. I'm kind of glad he scratched. hate, I hate saying that, but I'm kind of glad he scratched for my own sake because I was considering him. can only have so many horses. get it. get it. I I was considering him, but I don't think he was going to be my top pick. So I'm kind of just glad that he's out, even though

think he would have made the race maybe a little bit better. I thought that was a solid horse, but man sovereignty he did get beat by tapping street in that last race, but I like sovereignty, but I'm gonna tell you what my top pick right now and I will I will preface this by saying that I have studied the top One through 10 post position pretty

pretty well, like pretty deep into those 10. The next 10 I looked at, but not nearly as much as I looked at the first 10. So I do still need to do some research on some of these horses. Sandman's one you might want to look at. I'm fading Sandman. I got you. I'm fading Sandman. I wish he was one that was out because I don't think I'm betting. You want him to be out. But I don't think I'm betting about it. Who think the horse...

That's a big time move at the end. really do. The horse gots town. He's out of tap. yeah. He'll be able to get the distance. Tap. It's, we'll be able to get a lot of, he's going to get a lot of money too. He's that horse is going to get bat sand, man. he's probably like the what third or third, fourth pick right now. I'm going to be honest. I'm going to be honest with What's his odds? Six to one. I'm going be honest with you. I do not think he's probably the second pick, isn't he? I think hands down, like I wouldn't make, I would sit down with somebody.

And I would argue with any handicapper out there, think hands down the best value in the race is Grande. I just do it. He had two impressive maiden wins. He's out of curling. Yeah, my bad. Sorry. can't get to my pit. No, no, you're right. You're right. You're right. got some value dog. All right. I got some value. All right. or how many races you say your horses, your top pigs got? Three. Mine's got four. Yep. And you know,

I usually don't like horses like this that takes a little bit for them to break their maiden. Took this horse three times to break his maiden. But I really like Final Gambit. really like Final Gambit. Now he's never ran on dirt. Does worry me a little bit that he hasn't raced on the dirt. Little bit. But

Dude, go back and watch that Jeff Ruiz. Oh, I know. It was like he was shot out of a rocket ship. That's why I told you I liked him. Sierra Leone. All made over again. That is exactly what I thought when I seen the run that he made in that race. Reminded me of Sierra Leone. I love that he got, I love his Breeden. Breeden's top notch. I love his Breeden. Not owned by Judd Mott.

Bred by Judd Mott. Trained by Brad Cox. So they bred him and they didn't sell him. he's great. Little cool story. think the jockey has never been in the Derby. So it'd be, you think he could get it done on his first, first ever Derby. That's gotta be some pressure. And I think he's young too. I think the kids, ⁓ like a up and coming.

young jockey, but I like final gamut, except he doesn't have a lot of big races under his belt. Took him three times to break that maiden, but I'll scratch that first one. The first one was on turf. I'll scratch any first race. You don't gotta be good. Your first race for me. I think a horse makes his biggest jump first to second race. I don't know, man.

This is not normally looking at the past performance for that horse. I will say ⁓ his brisnet speed rating consistently going up too.

I don't know, man. He's going to become both of the horses I like are going to be coming from the back. Well, I say that final game that wants to come from the back. He wants to come from the way back. That's one thing that worries me a little bit. that's how Leone was. Sierra Leone didn't want to be in the middle. That horse wanted to be at the dead. It was like that horse was testing itself.

sovereignty is not going to be coming from the back sovereignty is probably going to be like like you've talked about maybe right middle pack eight eight through ten probably want to sit somewhere right around there. Yeah, agree with that. that might sound like way back. I it's where you want to be. I think that's where you want to be. It's really not. So I think the main question Anthony is how does the pace actually set up?

we've got a lot of speed horses, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the. And how's the track plan? How's that? You know, is the track. I've always said that that's a big, big factor. You know, is it, is it favoring speed? A lot of times on Derby, they have it juiced up. So we got a lot of speed horses that want to get to the front, but that does not mean that the pace is just going to automatically be fast. I've seen Charlie. I'm not saying it will happen because it probably likely won't happen, but I have seen it from.

decent amount of times where everybody thinks there's always speed horses and all the jockeys are thinking that too. So I think they're just going to lay off, take it easy a little bit, not kill it. And they make it too easy. And one, and one of them goes out front and make it too easy. And I'm going to tell you, you let citizen bull get out there on that lead. I think the horse get real brave. I think the horse has got a little dog. I will say out of the speed horses, I'd still be on citizen bull because I like them over Neo-Equos.

I do not like Rodriguez. I'm not big on American promise. I think you're right about the and almighty. He don't even need to be in this race. And then you got East Avenue. I'm going to have to look more into East Avenue. he's good. I think he's good. I think he's good often too. Is he? I think he is. Yeah, he is. Owned and bred too. You know, he broke dead last. Brendan Walsh.

He broke dead last in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Broke, I mean, just horrible broke. Grace was over. But before that, I think he might've been the favorite going into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. won the Breeders' Futurity like handily and then came back off his layoff, Fresno Star. He just didn't fire in the bluegrass. He had Nip by Nose by Burnham Square. That's probably the horse we're talking about that we probably should talk a little bit more about, even though he's not the horse I like. He's done nothing wrong. He's done nothing. Burnham Square.

Oh, yeah. You're right. He's got nothing wrong. He is definitely on my list of top three or four pick at easy. Yeah, he's he's he's on my list, but I disagree with East Avenue in the risen star. It looks like he did get out there. No, he just didn't fire. He just didn't fire. Oh, yeah. No, he just didn't fire. They they come back and said that they said they don't know what happened, but then he came back, killing.

Second to Burnham square by no and not just that but I think they ran, a decent pace that day. He probably should have won that race In the blue. Yeah, you're right Burnham square. That nothing brown square does look good because I was looking at the battles between Burnham square and Tappan Street Yeah, he yeah, he'd be he won the holy bull and then went up to the fountain of youth I don't know what happened there, but then he so he won the holy bull go up the fountain of youth and he jumps up here to

goes to the bluegrass and, wins it beats East Avenue by a nose. But I'll tell you this at Gulfstream park, you gotta be close to the lead. You just do it's a speed favor on track. And maybe that's why he left there. I don't know, you got, ⁓ Burnham squares got last year's Oaks and Derby winning jockey.

Mr. Brian Hernandez. he's out of Liam's map. Liam's map was a good one that probably is a very underrated horse, like far as all time greats. He ain't all time great, but he's a great of our generation that maybe is underrated. It's Liam's map. He was going to be a superstar. His life, his racing career got cut a little short, but Pletcher talks about him all the time. He's been a good sire. Pletcher says he's one of most talented horses he ever had. ended up last race, he won the Bridger's Cup dirt mile.

in the race before I won the Woodward and got second in the Whitney. map was a big time horse. So your top pick is what? 30 to one 20 or whatever he goes off. I don't care. And mine's 30 to one. We we gotta put an exacto. I was going to ask what your long shot is, but your top pick is your long shot. Cause mine is too. Final gambit sitting

30 to one, look, I don't know if I'm still gonna be on final game, but as my top pick here in the next couple of days when I get these last handful of horses really dug into, but I do like them right now.

Other than the long shots that we picked as our top pick, Anthony, is there any other long long shots that that you would consider that you like?

A bunch. Promise, Citizen Bull. Bull is 20 to 1. Look Derby is full with long East Avenue. Shit, if we're saying that, yeah, Citizen Bull, I didn't really realize it was 20 to 1. Yeah, I've kind of got more on Citizen Bull, dude. I think he's, I'm watching, he's got an excuse, man. He really doesn't.

You know, I doubted him early but he won the Brutus Cup Juvenile. he won his first race back. And then in that last race, the San Antonio Derby, I think he had excuses. I just really do. And I loved his athletic move, how he stumbled and got right back into the game fast. To me, it's a very athletic horse. And Bafford, I've heard her say about him, he thinks he's the shit. says, Citizen Bull thinks he's the best horse on the track always. His breeding's good. He's built a little different than the rest of the horses. I mean, he's built like, kind of like a little bull.

Strong looking horse. I don't know. He's just, he's a little different. I like Citizen Bull little bit. He's grown on me anyways. But for me, you know, I've told you Grande. And I want to explain to everybody why. And there's no way in my opinion this horse should be 20 to one. I don't think he'll go off 20 to one. I think Grande will go off 15 or 10 to one. I think he's very popular amongst the wise guys as they want to call it. He's out of Ripoli Stables, Todd Pletcher, Curlin, which is the favorite.

is journalism. He's out of Curlin. They're both out of Curlin. Curlin is really known to have really good female horses. Remember that year we went to the Breeders' Cup? Charlie and all three of them were out of Curlin. That was a great day to have. It was. they were all like, he is like, he was a superstar. One of the greatest horses of my lifetime. Has done really well as a stud, but usually produces great women. Like that's just, he ain't produced a lot of great males.

Well, this year he has in the Derby in journalism, the Derby favorite. But then you got Grande. Grande, his first race out was at Gulfstream, broke his maiden, second race out, lounge race.

One handily against Jimmy's daily, which was a competitive horse there. He goes to the wood memorial with only two races in him. He had to get first or second to get in the Derby. He had no Derby Rodriguez gets out on the easy lead, has the inside rail, everything to his favor. And Rodriguez was more seasoned. Grande went, I think, four wide around one turn, five wide around the other turn, and still closed pretty decent in that race. And really, with Rodriguez having everything his own way up front,

I think the horse has a lot of room to move up. I think the horse gets a lot of talent. I just do. I love everything about him. There's no way he should be 20 to one. I might be wrong about that, but I've heard some other, you know, big handicappers like him as well. I'm going say he goes off like 13 to one. All right. Couple other horses that we haven't touched on, but before we get to those, Anthony.

There's another similar horse to my top pick. Who's that? He's not currently in this race. yeah. But he is eligible to get in if somebody drops out. He'll into my top three. exact. Pretty much deal took him three races to break his maiden.

And then in the San Anita Derby run second, a close what? Within a length second. And he came to the Derby favorite journalism and he came. Citizen Bull was on the lead in that race and he came at a Citizen Bull early. And I feel like journalism was allowed to wait back there. And, you know, it took a lot out. I'm biased. I still almost won that race. So I will be watching if that horse draws in because I.

I love the way he looked in that San Anita Derby. Now, again, five horses in the San Anita Derby. I, but the quality was there. Quality was, I mean, I'm with you. I don't like it. The trick wasn't there. The, all the stuff that comes with the Derby, they got nowhere near that experience breaking out of that gate with five horses in it. So I do think that means something. does. But I, know, with Rodriguez going out, winning the wood after running against those horses.

To me, that gives us some but I'm with you. I do think it matters. for me, what I like about Bayes, I like everything you said about him. But to me, his mama's Puka. Look, studs get all the credit in the horse racing world. Puka, P-U-C-A, Puka. I hope I'm pronouncing that right. Puka? Which she was out of Big Brown. Yep. Big Brown.

The studs get all the credit in the horse racing world because the studs can have what, two or three hundred babies a year? You know, they just pop them out, just like a male. know, you know, just have all the, the girls can have one baby a year. Sometimes the babies don't even make it to horse racing. Some of them, you know, die at birth. So for a female, you don't hear a lot about the females in the breeding world. And then every once in a while you'll get, I mean, it's every once in a while.

where you get a female that produced multiple champions. It like hardly ever happens. I think it's happened like a couple of times in my lifetime. Well, Puka was the mama to Mage, which won the Derby a couple of years ago. And how do you pronounce the name? Dortman? Dortman. Dortman. He won the Belmont was last year and he was the horse that had all that fight in him. a very high level horse.

I had a hard like secretary. It did. And, ⁓ in, in mage, you know, was a Derby winner, a really talented horse. And now they got this by AZA. You just don't see mama's put out three horses at that level. can produce. And I like that angle alone. And I do like the other angles of the horse too. Not a bad sire either. No, Kenzie. Nope. matter of fact, if bias is in the race,

He might compete for my top pick, but I think I'll still stick with Grande. But if I won't like the post, he'll get, cause he'll get the far outside post. Correct, Charlie? Yeah. But rich strike. I know the 21. I'm pretty sure rich strike was the 21 drew in that year too. I didn't even look at that. Damn. would really like to see.

that horse get in. I would too. I think it'd be good for the Derby. I the horse is talented enough. I hate that like nothing against Owen Almighty, but I hate that like an Owen Almighty, you know, gets in and he don't, but about that short field by A's that would have been in any other year, but there's a new rule in the Kentucky Derby points where if you don't have so many, um, as it should, yeah, I get it. Yeah, I do too.

With the small amount, the small field, they take away points or cut the points in half. think. Isn't that what it was? So a couple of other ones that we haven't touched on sand man going to be one of the top picks, Anthony top two or three picks Arkansas Derby winner, He's always closing horses getting talked to talked about by a lot of local heads around here. I've heard the name mentioned.

I think the horse is going to catch a lot of money. One of the big things with the Derby is you got to be able to get the mile and a quarter. Not all the horses are bred to go a mile and a quarter. There's a big difference between a mile and an eighth of a mile and a quarter. He's out of tap at tap. It's known to always get the distance. That's stamina all over it. So I do think you'll have no problem getting the distance, which I think is a huge plus. Sometimes there's only five or six horses in the Derby that can get the distance. I think that's a great handicap and thing. Like cross out the horses that can't get the distance because not everybody can get a mile and a quarter.

Been on the board.

six out of eight races. The only two that he didn't hit the board was his first race, which we've already said we can scratch that out. I have no problem doing that. the only other one was in the Ear Koi and he had it was step slow coming out of the gate. he was a two year old too. That's a long time ago. Yeah.

I like that horse. Come that core at horse has not done a lot wrong either. We talked about Burnham square. This is another one. I I'm to have to look more into Sandman. I thought I was fading Sandman. But I'm going to I'm going to look at it. This horse is going to be scary to try to leave out of your out of your exotics. I think maybe even if he's not my top pick, I might need to look into this horse because it looks like he likes to get up on that board.

I don't know what race it was. was either the he won the Arkansas. I got third in the rebel and second in the South West. It was either the Southwest or the rebel. One of them. broke horrible Yeah, that was the Southwest and he still got second in that race. But I will say, you know what? Now that I'm looking at this dude, that horse does not break well Yeah, bump, broke in.

Some horses are at least three or four times already in his career. So I always still gets up. I always say tap. It's or, you know, they're for staying with it, but they're also known to be immature. That horse wants to run from the back anyway, so he ain't trying to get to the front off the bat anyway. So I let you know, those are the not that you want your horse to take an awkward step, but if anybody is going to be a step slow out of the gate, a closer is the one you want. Right. yeah, I agree with that. The best horse I ever seen in my life.

Light line. He was a tap it. Light line. That was a yeah. We should start seeing his baby shit when you said something about that. It's it's gotta be coming. I would say soon. What about this cold battle? That's another horse that I've been hearing people talk about the story and all that. Yeah. didn't like it. not into stories. I didn't like him when I looked at it, but I feel like he got lucky to win the races. He did. I was

Bet those races I like, you lucky dog. But in the Derby, when Rich Strike can win it, mind the burden of being decent. But when Rich Strike can win it, when those type horses can win it, anybody can win it. 20 horses, guys, there shouldn't be 20 horses on the track. But that also opens the door. Not the best horse always wins the Derby. I think everybody agrees with that. I've said that for years. I think almost everybody's on board now that the best horse don't win the Derby.

I mean, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, but you get a horse of that's the nicest thing about a six or seven horse field is a lot of times the best horse does win. When you got 20 horses, good luck. Sometimes the best win. Sometimes it takes a lot of luck. lot of you got to get a good break. You got to have a good trip. You can't, know, you can't have a horse come over and bang into you once or twice throughout the trip. And it's tough with 20 horse. could change everything up. So

Whatever you think is going to happen, you can throw it all out when that gate breaks because you have no clue what's going to happen. Your horse can take a bad step right out of the gate or get bumped around or get closed in right out of the gate, get pushed way back and just not be comfortable and be out of the race real quick. So it'd be Anthony render judgment tis tastic. You got anything on him?

No, it's just as it got either one of them. No, think he was the Louisiana Derby. Yeah. It's look, it's we, think what about the mate? What about the maiden? What about publisher? He's been running against good competition. I mean, it's yeah, he's a maids race seven times. Hasn't won yet. Yeah, but it ain't like going to the Derby. ain't like he's raced against dots. Why you guys the points? Cause he's running against good competition. look, he's got a shot. If he's running against a good competition and showing up second to saying, man, it was a really close race.

That was the last one out. Yeah. Yeah, it was by half a line or no two and a half I'm two and a half So he wasn't too far. That was Arkansas Derby Second to Sandman. He's got a good often it no is he no, it's all from TN East Avenue But he's got good breeding if I remember Gus King and the estate Barrett and C Joe that's the owner. He was the governor. Remember remember Burton Jones. He was the governor horse breeder. Yeah

⁓ Barretton C. Jones. He's the mayor of what? He was the governor of Kentucky. really? Yeah, I think he was. Then he was a big horse breeder too, but I think he's dead now. I think he was a... Well, his family still owns. Anybody else we have? Flying Mohawk, you got anything for him? No. I don't like him either.

I did not look at Rich Trike that year, so I'll just let you know that. I did not look at it that year. Mohawk, yeah, I ain't got nothing for Yeah, he was governor of Kentucky from 91 to 95.

Turn them square. Journalism. We mentioned the two Japanese. Put journalism on your tickets. I'm not saying you gotta pick him to win, but don't lose a trifecta or something because you don't got him on there. Horse is pretty solid. All right, what's your top four? I will go. This is saying that Biaiza does not draw in. Yeah, we gotta go with what we got right here without Biaiza. I'm gonna go Grande. I'm gonna go journalism.

Citizen Bull and I'm going to go ⁓ American Promise. All right, give me those numbers. ⁓ One. shots, but one. One, five. Who is the other ones? Journalism for second Citizen Bull, American Promise. Journalism. Yeah. Eight. And Grande, the 10. So you're on the one, five, eight, 10.

you got the 10 as your, as your top pick journalism is second, a close third would be citizen bull. And I'll put American promise number four. do think if American promise runs back to the Virginia Derby, out. They say he's the best looking like horse in the race. So they say he's a very intimidating figure American promise my top four.

Final Gambit.

Sovereignty.

And then I'm going with the favorite journalism and I'm throwing Citizen Bull in there right now. Final Gambit, Sovereignty, Journalism, Citizen Bull. I'll tell you what, promise, the horse I was saying. I don't think it's being talked about enough because he's done really good as a sire. He's got to justify out of a tap at mayor. Don't get much better than

I sure don't. You know, I never gave Justify enough credit. I didn't, and I'll say it. I think American Feral was better than him. But I think Justify has made a better sire than Ameri...

the only horse we didn't mention Anthony was a chunk of gold chunk of gold. They probably win it. ⁓ Here's your winner. Chunk of gold. A bunch of seconds. Yeah. He likes to finish second. I ain't got nothing for chunk of gold though, but you never know. need the rain clouds open. can happen. I promise you a fridge strikes win it. Anybody can win it. Well, look,

If you don't listen to our picks, I probably wouldn't make your own. Yes. No doubt. Make your own. No doubt. Shit. Everybody's got their own picks for Derby. Everybody thinks that you make your own pick. It's a crap shoot. And then you'll if you win it, you'll feel really good about it. That's the thing. You're going to listen to anybody's picks.

CT's Derby picks will be coming out Friday night, probably late Friday night. I heard he's got some inside information. Late Friday night. CT's Derby picks. If you're going to listen to anybody and take anybody's advice, these are the guys to listen to. We'll be posting it on the social media accounts. We couldn't get them early enough to get it on the episode, but

I'm gonna get it Friday night. He's charging for his picks. So guys tune in because these are picks that he is actually charging a lot of money for. He's a track guy. Call him a little bit of an insider, he's got some information. He's they yeah, they they they got the information and they've been hitting the road and finding out, you know, all the information they can and

These guys just, they always have the information nobody else has. got the top information. I mean, it's, The information you hear from them, you will not hear from anybody else. I can promise you that. Guys, that's worth it in itself. All right, Anthony, before we get off here, we do have to mention the paddock. new paddock at Churchill downs is maybe, I mean, it Churchill downs was already the greatest

racetrack, right? I would say 25 years ago, was falling behind, but they've done so many renovations. They've caught us up. We're the best again. mean, like, look, there was about 25 years ago that the track was starting to get old. it was. And they weren't, like, they weren't doing enough renovations. And that's, there's a big tax thing they're arguing about now, but that's why they gave them a tax incentive because, but they've done maybe five major renovations. And this last one was a major renovation. The pad is starting a new one now.

Whoever designed it. Greatest thing ever. Yeah. They, I mean, they spent a lot of money on it, but you know, the one of biggest arguments was the twin spires got lost in all the renovations and it were kind of hidden. They brought them front and center. I mean, you go in there, it looks like a football stadium in there. It's awesome. It looks like the Coliseum. It does. I agree. You know, a good, that's fair. I like that. It's kind of how it's set up. I'll be honest when they first

down the paddock and it was like temporary there and they were doing all the construction for the new paddock. My expectations weren't that high. No, mine not at all. I was kind of sad. I was like, man, this is not going to be the same. Remember they had the temporary paddock that Derby? It was kind of weak. It was real weak. But I'm going tell you what, when it opened it, I love how it brings the twin spires right there. Oh, it's great. I don't know what my expectations were, but

It was not that because I was genuinely a little bit sad. Like, man, this paddock that we've known for all these years is not going to be there. It's not going to be right. Like it's not even going to be Churchill Downs anymore. I I felt that way when the paddock pavilion, when they took away the paddock pavilion where you spent, watch the jockeys come out on the picnic table. Me and my grandma used to take me there and it was just kind of a hard spot.

But you used to, you could still see them come down. They still come down them steps. But you know, before that was even a building. It was just like a picnic area that just had a roof on it. It was just like a, I know what you're talking about. Yeah. And we used to always sit there. That's where they would bring the RVs in for the chili cook it was good. Just a lot of memories.

All right, Anthony, Tomorrow starts Derby week at the track. I can't wait. I hope the rain is not as bad as they say it is, but I don't really care. Anthony, I'm ready to go. Let's go Figure out what you're doing tomorrow. I'll be there. Let me know. figure out if I'm taking my kid or I'll be there. They're not playing baseball. I think you're right.

highly doubt it, but let's have some fun this week at the track. Let's win some money. Let's get rich. Let's all get rich. Let's bet some pick fours and pick fives. That's what we need. Anthony, you know, we've talked about the older I get, the more I go after the big money. I used to hate those kinds of bets, like the pick fours and super factors. I think, man, I'm trying to win. but now that I'm older, I'm trying to hit the big fours. I want to pick four. I want a big win.

I'm trying to walk out of the track one day with a bag of money. Yeah, I hear you. But I feel like when I was young, I never got into those bets. I never got into those bets. I did not bet pick fours and pick fives until about two years ago. I just, the odds probably aren't that good. Like sometimes I'm struggling to just pick a A winner. And thing about is to really have a good shot. it's like four in a row.

The thing about it is to have a good shot You got to invest not a lot, but you can invest a little money. And you just, if not, you just don't get much coverage. It's hard to bet a $20 pick five ticket. Yeah. You know, you can, but you're only going to have a couple of horses. I bet five dollars straight pick there. You know, my five dollars straight pick three. hit one every once in while. Straight pick. That's my bet. That's my bet. And I like the, I like, don't invest a lot in them, but like every race, I think I bet a five dollars straight pick there.

See, I don't do the pick threes. I do like the big doubles. Well, I say big, just whatever's big for you. I like betting the doubles for some dollars. I'm trying to just pick two And it really increases the And I know you got to pick two in a row, but if you get that first one, you only got to bet the next. Even if you don't win the next race, you only got to bet it because you got a good double going. Yeah, I do. That might be my favorite bet is the double.

You know, double used to be just first and second race and ninth and 10th race. And now they got the rolling double. can on do that shit pretty much every race. But that was a big thing. you go to old people, you get over there for the early double, you get over there for the late doubles. I remember Like your grandma, grandpa, they got doubles every race now. But the double used to be the first and second race and then the ninth and 10th race. that. Yeah, and the pick three, there was only certain races. Now they got rolling pick threes. There used to only be certain races. Why not?

Well, they got with the times. They got with the times. was a, you know, the superfect is a newer bet. it was just exact and trifecta and a dollar bet became a newer bet. They're used to, I'm pretty sure they're used to only be like a $2 bet. Yeah. And then supers a lot of times on, know, off tracks and off days, you can bet 10 cent supers, which is good for people that, you know, I ain't trying to bet.

a bunch of money or trying to, you you try I've seen some people bet some big 10 cent supers, but get like a lot of coverage with the 10 cent supers. You ain't bet no 10 cent super on Derby day. Oh, can you not? No, they're all dollars. They limit it to a dollar because I guess there's so many people betting they probably got. I will say this, we've had some experience with pick sixes and stuff and I've learned a lot about pick sixes, God, I remember about them. I do like the idea of it being a dollar pick six because when you get to like a 20 cents picks, at least a 50 cents.

At least 50 cents. Cause when you get to a 20 cents pick six, it's a lot more tickets. Everybody gets it. if you have a dollar, it's harder to hit. It's harder. I'm sure that's why they're doing it with the supers too. Imagine if they were doing 10, if they allowed 10 cent supers in the Derby. it's so many more tickets in the pit and your lines would be long too. It would be long.

your pick six tickets, I know some tracks they pay out for a dollar. Like if you have a 10, like a 50 cents pick six, they pay out a certain jackpot, but you gotta have a dollar. I don't know. It's something like that. Well, we need to, we need to pick a couple pick, pick fives.

$20,000 pick for going to the Derby one time. Needed Nero. Nero got second. But Animal Kingdom smoked his ass. I had Animal Kingdom that year. I think that might have been my first ever Derby winner was Animal Kingdom. I wish I would have had. I don't even think Animal Kingdom had raced on the dirt. Synthetic. Synthetic. Yeah, he came out of Turfway. That's your final gambit. Sounds like final gambit. That's right. All right, guys, we got through it. Go win some money.

Hit them superfectus trifectus, pick fours, pick fives, pick sixes, hit them all. Bliss the bookie. See y'all.
